2013 Fundraising Update

beatsonWith 2013 rapidly drawing to a close it’s time for an update on the money we’ve raised this year for our chosen charity Friends of the Beatson. The Friends of the Beatson Centre, located on the fourth floor of the recently built Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre building, has been designed as a “retreat” for patients and a place of calm. It was constructed by and is run by Friends of the Beatson and is independent of the main hospital operation.

The imaginatively designed Centre provides a relaxing and therapeutic environment with complementary non-medical services designed to assist the wellbeing of Beatson patients. As such, it is a very special place.

The facilities include:

  • lounge with wonderful views over the West End of Glasgow
  • chill out spaces
  • library area
  • state of the art music facilities
  • top quality tea and coffee bar
  • therapy/massage rooms
  • specialist hairdressing and beautician facilities
  • purpose-built cinema

After last years fundraising efforts we were invited to have a look around the Centre and believe me it’s a wonderful place. I felt quite emotional while visiting the centre and proud that we were able to help out a little with our fundraising. Sadly these days everyone knows someone affected by cancer either directly or indirectly. I’ve had family members and close friends who’ve been affected by it and sadly a few of them are no longer with us. While they were receiving their treatment they made use of the Centre and had high praise for the centre itself and the staff that worked within it.

Last year we managed to raise £2,661.00 by competing in our first ever sportive, the Scottish Bike Show Sportive, which was set over a grueling 65 mile course taking in the famous Dukes Pass!

We decided to adopt Friends of the Beatson as our chosen charity and continue our fundraising efforts in 2013. I set the target of £2,661.00 as that was the amount we had raised the previous year. It was going to be a big ask to beat that amount with the recession and there’s only so many times you can ask someone to sponsor you. We were aiming at this target over several events.

The first sponsored event was supposed to be the Scottish Bike Show Sportive but that was cancelled just 2 weeks before the event without explanation! We had already collected some sponsorship so decided to head to Arran to complete the tough 57 miles around the Island.

The second sponsored event of the year took us to Pitlochry to tackle the Etape Caledonia 85 mile sportive for the very first time. The Warriors excelled with everyone coming in the top half of the 3,000 strong field!

Next up came a very tough 68 mile route round Ayrshire for the Graeme Obree Sportive which saw Gilly put in arguably his best performance of the season!

With the Graeme Obree out the way it was time for a local event, the Strathaven Round 50, which as it says was a 50 mile route.

The final sponsored event of 2013 saw Stevie Potter, Gilly, Chris Hunter and myself take on the Pedal for Scotland, Glasgow to Edinburgh 113 mile Sportive!

2013 saw us raise a credible £2,300.35! Short of my initial target but still a very respectable amount which I’m pleased about.

2014 will see more of the same as we aim to raise yet more money for this wonderful charity and help keep the centre running.

Our JustGiving Page is about to close but there’s still time to make a donation if you wish. It doesn’t matter how little, it all builds up and makes a difference to those battling against cancer and allows them a wee bit of normality and an escape from it all for a couple of hours.

What a year it’s been with a number of events being completed and personal goals smashed! I personally have lost weight and seen health benefits from cycling the past 2 years and look to continue this in to 2014.

I have to say a BIG thank you to all our Sponsors, Spice, Big Bobble Hats, Integrated Water Services, All Secure Limited and PTS Gadget Repairs who’ve helped us out funding team kit and donations to our chosen charity throughout the year.

Finally I have to mention the guys at 3LC who’ve whipped me into shape with their series of turbo trainer workout DVD’s.
